A WEEKEND IN AMSTERDAM

June 28, 2017

A city after our very own hearts, Amsterdam is truly one of our favourites. We are lucky enough to have friends here to share with us their secret local spots, and new places to try out each time we visit. Flights to central Europe usually stop over in either Dubai or Amsterdam(no brainer), so we added it to our trip cause what’s summer without a weekend of canals, bitterballen and laughs with friends across the world. I made a little guide of things to do with links that we tried, tested and adored.

SPOTS TO TRY

9 Straats
The nine streets are a collection of tiny alleys filled with the coolest clothing stores, and local designers. If you visit, make sure to stop at Jansz for lunch.

Tweede Kamer
Also known as Parliment; a cool coffee shop, not filled to the brim with tourists.

Lot Sixty One
A proper coffee shop, as in drinkable liquid, banana bread & the most delicious oat milk you will ever taste.

De Hallen
I can only describe this place as the Biscuit Mill (Woodstock) + Mojo Markey(Seapoint) had a baby with Hercules and popped out a rad food hangout with way too many options, cool bars and of course a touch of shopping. Major regrets for the straw basket with extra length leather straps I left behind due to “crushing” possibilities during the rest of my trip.

Leidseplein
It’s one of the main squares in Amsterdam, and where it is super touristy-y its also a vibe and gives you that young vibrant feeling of Amsterdam. Not to mention the Camper store down the road which I lost my self in (pictures of those beauties to appear soon)

De ysbreeker
More upmarket and posh in the Amstel residential area, this spots hosts some of Amsterdam’s TOP bitterballen, a crazy view of the Amstel river & of course a tyre pump incase your bicycle let you down en route. Check it out here.

Lighthouse Island pop-up
Take a boat to the lighthouse pop-up restaurant. Five course experimental cuisine, kind of like our Test Kitchen in cape Town but with breath taking views and a Babylonstoren set up. It’s quite pricey but if you want a cool experience try it.
